Pomegranate Health Facts &Remedies

Pomegranate Flower and Fruit Arrangement on a Coffee Table, Samode Bagh or Garden, Samode, India

The Pomegranate has long been recognized as a fruit with many health benefits. Pomegranate tops all other conventional fruits, including blueberry and strawberry, in its ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value, ranking pomegranate as one of the most powerful antioxidant fruits.

Locked within the seeds of the Pomegranate are rare compounds that can fight free radicals and help stall the effects of aging. Pomegranate seed oil possesses natural estrogenic properties that can help revitalize your skin, resolve fine wrinkles, and help you look and feel more youthful.

"Pomegranates are unique in that the hormonal combinations inherent in the fruit seem to be helpful both for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer," explains Dr. Ephraim Lansky, who headed the studies. "Pomegranates seem to replace needed estrogen often prescribed to protect postmenopausal women against heart disease and osteoporosis, while selectively destroying estrogen-dependent cancer cells."

100% Premium Pomegranate Seed Oil is difficult to find. The benefits when used in skin care products is amazing. You only need to use a small amount of oil in your formula. Typically .5-1%. Pomegranate Seed Oil has a soft aroma of pomegranates. This is not an essential oil it is a carrier oil.

Pomegranate seed oil is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help provide quick relief from minor skin irritations. Pomegranate seed oil is one of the only plant sources of conjugated fatty acids and contains an exceptional amount of punicic acid, a compound closely related to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Scientific studies have shown that the potent therapeutic and preventive properties of CLA may help the body fight against human cancers, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Punicic acid, abundant in pomegranate seed oil, has been called a "super CLA", whose effect is even more potent than ordinary CLA.

The bark of the stem and root contains several alkaloids including isopelletierine which is active against tapeworms. Extracts of the bark, leaves, immature fruit and fruit rind have been given as astringents to halt diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhages. Dried, pulverized flower buds are employed as a remedy for bronchitis. In Mexico, a decoction of the flowers is gargled to relieve oral and throat inflammation. Leaves, seeds, roots and bark have displayed hypotensive, antispasmodic and anthelmintic activity in bioassay. It is high in antioxidants and in some studies has lowered LDL cholesterol levels.

Israeli researchers further certained the effects of pomegranate juice consumption by atherosclerotic patients with carotid artery stenosis (a narrowing of the carotid artery walls). Ten patients supplemented with the juice for one year. In the pomegranate-supplemented group, carotid intima-media thickness, an indicator of atherosclerosis progression, was reduced by up to 30%. By contrast, in a control group that did not consume pomegranate juice, carotid intima-media thickness increased by 9% over 12 months.

A recent Iranian study examined the effects of concentrated pomegranate juice on lipid profiles of type II diabetes patients with elevated blood lipids, or hyperlipidemia. The patients supplemented with pomegranate juice for eight weeks. The study participants saw significant reductions in their total cholesterol, LDL, LDL:HDL (high-density lipoprotein) ratio, and total cholesterol:HDL ratio. Serum HDL and triglycerides did not change significantly. The study authors concluded that consumption of concentrated pomegranate extract may modify heart-disease risk factors in patients with high cholesterol.

Pomegranate Juice contains a wide range of polyphenolic compounds, including ellagic and gallic acid, anthocyanins and tannins, especially punicalagin. Punicalagin is a powerful antioxidant, protecting cardiovascular function and accurate cellular replication.* Israeli researchers discovered that the fruit could have important implications for breast cancer treatment and estrogen replacement therapy.

The juice of wild pomegranates yields citric acid and sodium citrate for pharmaceutical purposes. Pomegranate juice enters into preparations for treating dyspepsia and is considered beneficial in leprosy.

Take 1 - 2 tablespoons of Pomegranate Juice Concentrate per day. May be mixed in cold water, juice, tea, or other beverage of choice.

Clinical and experimental studies show that Pomegranate juice:

• Decreases Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation.*™

• Enhances cellular (macrophage) glutathione.*™

• Helps maintain regular platelet activity.*

• Reduces activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and supports normal vascular contraction.*

• Promotes normal cell function and replication.*

Pomegranate Seed Oil can be used topically, or as a personal lubricant. It can also be used orally under the guidance of a health care professional. Use it daily to look and feel your best!

Pomegranate seed oil is one of the only plant sources of conjugated fatty acids and it contains an abundant amount of punicic acid, a compound closely related to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The punicic acid found pomegranate seed oil and has been called a "super CLA" whose effect is even more potent than ordinary CLA. Scientific studies have indicated that it may support the immune system, and help the body fight against human cancers, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Pomegranate seed oil also contains phytoestrogens, similar to the estrogens naturally produced by the human body. Many women have found that using pomegranate seed oil has helped to ease symptoms associated with menopause and perimenopause, such as mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and diminished libido. To relieve the symptoms of menopause, pomegranate seed oil can be used topically as a skin moisturizer, orally as a dietary supplement, as a massage oil, or as a personal lubricant.

Cosmetic Use:

Pomegranate seed oil is commonly used in cosmetic products to revitalize dull or mature skin, assist with wrinkles, and to soothe minor skin irritations. Without moisture, wrinkles become more abundant and pronounced, the skin looks tight and lacks luster. Pomegranate seed oil adds moisture, has natural estrogenic properties, anti-oxidants, is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, improves skin elasticity, and protects the skin. It provides relief from minor skin irritations and inflammation, including dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and sunburned skin. The conjugated fatty acids give it strong anti-inflammatory properties, which help to reduce swelling and ease muscular aches and pains.

Several recent studies, including one conducted by the University of Michigan Medical School (published in the February 2006 Journal of Ethnopharmacology), have shown that pomegranate seed oil stimulates keratinocyte proliferation, promoting regeneration and strengthening of the epidermis. This study compliments other recent studies, which have also shown the beneficial results of using pomegranate seed oil.

Boil some pomegranate rinds and drink as a tea. The pomegranate contains astringents.

Warnings:
People on hypertensive medications should monitor their blood pressure closely when taking pomegranate juice. Those who are allergic to many plants should consult their physician before taking pomegranate or pomegranate products.
