Foods That Improve Brain Function And Memory

Baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are at high risk of memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's. A 2013 Study estimated that 13.8 million baby boomers will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease by 2050. The rate rises dramatically for those living to 85 and beyond (nearly 50 percent). It is time we protect our brain and start treating our memory now.

Our brain cells age much in the same way as our skin cells do. The surface of Your Brain is Made from Fatty Acids or "healthy fats" Omega-3 fatty acids, the essential building materials that build brain cells. Antioxidant's protect our brain cells and against mental decline and dementia. Fatty acids are key building blocks to a healthy brain. As we age our body depletes these fatty acids and antioxidants and weakens our brains function and brain cells. The good news is, there are foods that we can eat to protect those cells. Foods high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can improve brain health, memory, and concentration, experts say and they are:

Fish

Recent studies have proven that fish oil supplements do not help slow the cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer's disease, however other research has discovered that fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids does help slow down the deterioration of aging.

A 2005 collaborative study found that people 65 and older who ate fish twice a week for six years, reduced the amount of cognitive decline by 13 percent compared to those who did not. And people who ate fish once a week decreased their cognitive decline by 10 percent.

A recent study shows that a dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids may cause your brain to age faster and lose some of its memory and thinking capabilities. People with lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids have lower brain size functioning, equivalent to approximately two years of structural brain aging.

A 2010 Study showed that Fish high in vitamin B12 may also help protect us from memory loss or Alzheimer's disease.

Walnuts

These delicious little nuts even look similar to our brain, and pack a punch when it comes to brain function.

Walnuts are an Antioxidant Super-food containing high amounts of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have shown can improve brain health and memory. As we age free radicals flow through our bloodstream and break down brain cells. When this happens we experience a loss of memory. The good news is, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids combat free radical damage to the brain cells' DNA, and all other degenerative diseases associated with aging.

A 2009 study in the Journal of Nutrition found that diets in which nuts made up as little as 2 percent reversed signs of aging in the brains of old rats, including the ability of the brain to function and process information.

A 2010 a study on Alzheimer's Disease found that mice with Alzheimer's demonstrated significant improvement in their learning, memory, emotional regulation and motor coordination after being fed walnuts.

Spinach

Spinach is brain food. It is loaded with vitamins C and E and studies have shown that eating these leafy vegetables can help improve cognitive abilities. Spinach boosts brain power by feeding it vital nutrients and enzymes that strengthen the synapses and produce healthy levels of neurotransmitters. Spinach is also the richest source of folic acid and iron. Low levels of Folic acid have been linked to memory loss and heart disease. Spinach keeps the brain alert and functioning in old age.

Spinach also aids in controlling water retention and eliminates bloating. Neurologists recommend eating spinach at least 3 times a week as brain food. Organic spinach is recommended by experts because it is the top ten insecticide-laden vegetables. I love spinach and I eats me spinach, just like Popeye the sailor man, and you should too.

The folic acid in Spinach has can effectively prevent dementia in women. A study has proven that middle-aged women who ate spinach and other green vegetables, delayed cognitive impairment by 2 entire years.

A 2000 study in the Journals of Gerontology showed that rats whose diet was supplemented with vitamin E experienced a 500 to 900 percent increase in brain and nerve tissue over an eight-month period, as well as an increase in the release of dopamine in the brain, the "pleasure" chemical that controls flow of information to different parts of the brain.

And a 2000 study found that aging rats, when fed spinach, strawberries or blueberries, some of their age-related memory and motor deficits were reversed.

Carrots

Carrots are high in vitamin A which is essential for good vision - But carrots are also good for the brain, too.

Carrots contain high levels of luteolin a yellow crystalline compound. It plays a role in the human body as an antioxidant, a free radical scavenger, a carbohydrate metabolism promoter, and provides the key to maintaining a strong and properly functioning immune system.

According to a 2010 study in the journal Nutrition, Carrots reduce age-related memory deficits and inflammation in the brain. The study revealed that when mice ate 20 milligrams of luteolin daily the inflammation in their brains were reduced.

Olive oil, peppers and celery are also high in luteolin.

If you want to stimulate your brain you have to incorporate (raw) carrots into your diet.

Berries

Vitamin-rich berries can improve your memory, according to several studies. A recent study showed that women who eat berries have a slower rate of age-related memory loss than those who do not.

In 2008, researchers found that the anthocyanins in blueberries activate the part of the brain that controls memory and learning. A recent study has shown that blueberries had a considerable improvement in learning and world list recall, which backs up the 2008 study.

In a 2009 researchers examined a group of studies that showed fruits high in antioxidant such as blueberries and strawberries, can decrease a type of stress in cells associated with aging and increase the signaling capabilities in brains.

Several studies showed that when a dietary supplement of blueberry extract was used, age-related declines in neuronal and cognitive function were reduced.

Blueberries are Packed with unique antioxidants that neutralize free radical damage to the collagen matrix (connective tissues) that can lead to a multitude of degenerative disorders.

"Because blueberries are high in antioxidants, which have beneficial health effects, they are being examined in many research projects," said Donal O'Mathuna after looking at the study results. "Blueberries are a nutritious and safe food... adding blueberries to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is warranted."

Concord Grapes

Concord Grapes are an Antioxidant Superpower Super-food that is often overlooked. I love Concord Grape Juice and the whole berry itself is an exceptional taste treat. We planted grape plants in our backyard, and not only does the plant look beautiful growing on our fence line, they provide many benefits for the human body.

Concord Grapes are rich in antioxidants poly-phenols (usually found in the skin and seeds) and help support the immune system, promotes a healthy heart, relaxes and clears arteries, and reduces bad LDL cholesterol. Poly-phenols also help neutralize unstable free radicals which are linked to many chronic diseases and help support healthy blood pressure. According to a researchers at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center these red juicy grapes improve brain function and memory, as well as preventing cancer. According to 2008 study by Seeram and colleagues, the poly-phenol concentration in Concord grape juice exceeded that of many other juices, including blueberry, açaí, cranberry, orange, and apple juices.

Coffee & Tea

Studies have shown that Coffee and tea may prevent dementia, Alzheimer's disease and memory loss, and improve cognitive function.

Coffee contains poly-phenols and these compounds have an antioxidant effect and potentially reduce oxidative cell damage. Several studies found that those who drink 3–5 cups per day were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease in later years. A study in 2009 found that moderate coffee drinkers had reduced risk of developing dementia in addition to Alzheimer's disease.

A 2010 study found that when caffeinated coffee was given to mice genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer's disease, the disease either slowed in progression or never developed. Coffee eventually could serve as a therapeutic treatment for people with Alzheimer's disease, said researchers.

Study showed that tea drinkers did better on tests on memory and information processing than non-tea drinkers, according to a 2010 study of 716 Chinese adults 55 and older in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. In fact, drinking tea appears to affect the brain in a similar way as drugs prescribed for Alzheimer's disease the UK researchers report.

Drinking a cup of tea daily can improve memory and help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

To accelerate your brain health and slow cognitive decline, eat your leafy greens, berries, nuts and fish and don't forget your coffee and tea.
